Then I got to thinking of ideas throughout the years that seemed like really cool things, but are actually quite confusing for children. Most recent, window markers and crayons. Super cool, right? In fact, I didn't even think this one through until a friend of mine brought it up. Her parents got them for her kids. Guess what? Figuring out the difference between window markers and crayons and regular ones is tough for a 3 year old. Then let's take a look at a popular trend for girls... haircut Barbie. I remember growing up and wanting the big head to cut the hair and then you just pull it and it grows back! Super fun....or not, especially when you have a little girl who believes that if you cut hair, you can just put it back on. I don't trust Sunshine with scissors and I definitely wouldn't give her a doll where I encourage cutting hair. Then there's Moon Sand. It's sand people. In your house. Enough said.
Don't get me wrong, I believe in letting my kids have fun and explore things. However, at their current ages, somethings just don't work. When they get older, I may let them paint themselves, but, by that time, Monster will be too old and probably not want to. I have made window paint for Monster and we do it when Sunshine is napping. The paint is gone when she gets up. Maybe when Sunshine is 25 she can have a Barbie where you can cut her hair. There will never be Moon Sand in my house, or any sand...ever.
