Before I got married, a co-worker of mine was talking about how after 10 years, everything starts to fall apart. No, I'm not talking about the marriage, I'm talking about houses. She made a comment on how people really need to have "We've Made it Ten Years" parties that are sort of like bridal showers where you get all sorts of appliances and stuff. Why? Because after 10 years, everything starts to break. If you've ever lived in a house for 10 years, you know what I'm talking about. Well, we hit the 10 year mark with our house. Know what? It's pretty much dead on. We need almost all new appliances. Now, we got lucky because a lot of the appliances are over 10 years, so we've managed to scrape by. Since about year 1, we've been replacing parts for the fridge. Microwave had to be replaced about 2 years ago. Two of three ceiling fans have been replaced. Dishwasher needed repaired. Washer needed repaired. Today, I went to make pizza dough and my Kitchen Aid mixer is making a grinding noise while on the lowest speed. And that's the big stuff. The little stuff is worse. Sheets and towels are worn out. We are on our second vacuum, second steam mop, second coffee maker, second coffee grinder, fourth dvd player, and on and on. I have a friend who has been married 11 years and this past year, she's gotten down to about 3 plates she got from her wedding that haven't been broken. So this is when we need to have another "shower" for all the essentials that no one wants to buy you for Christmas or birthdays but seem to be happy to buy for wedding showers. I say we start a trend of the "10 Year Shower". We're a year and a half over it, but it will be belated. I'll go discuss this great plan with Target so that they add "10 Year Shower" to their registries. Or, maybe I'll just find a good place to take my Kitchen Aid into and deal with worn out sheets.

What about when you buy and move into a house where everything is 10+ years old?
