A few weeks ago, Monster fell out of a tree. We were so, so fortunate that he only got the wind knocked out of him and a black eye. He was a trooper. With all the rain we've been having and our crazy schedule, the kids haven't had a ton of time to play in the yard since this happened. They've hung from monkey bars, slid down fire poles and jumped off the top of play sets at the park since then and I hadn't been phased. Yesterday, Monster got back up in the tree. My stomach had that feeling again. It took all of me to let him be up there and not completely freak out. OK, so I freaked out a little and told him to be careful about 100 times before Husband told me, "If he falls, he falls". True. We can not live our lives being scared of the "what ifs". We all fall. It's important we teach our children that it's OK to fall and it's also OK to get back up. We keep trying and living our lives. If we fall, we fall.
We all did crazy stuff as kids. We've all hung from monkey bars and climbed trees. The majority of us road bikes with no helmets. We did dare devil moves with our skateboards or roller blades. And we fell. Sometimes we'd end up in the ER, but the majority of the time, we just ended up with scrapes and bruises. We never gave any of it a second thought. Being on the parent end is so very different. I remember the first time Monster climbed up a ladder at a local park without me right under him. He was 3. The only reason I wasn't right under him was because I had just had Sunshine and I was attending to her. I look up, and he's climbed to the top. "When did he learn to do that?", I remember thinking. I also remember that feeling in my stomach. That horrible feeling of "what if he falls?". Over the years, there have been many moments in both kids' lives where I've had that feeling. The thing is, we have to let them fall. If they don't fall, they won't know how to get back up.
