I am the first to admit, I really dislike winter. I can't stand cold, snow or ice. That makes living in Northeast Ohio a tad difficult for at least 4 months out of the year. Last year, I was completely spoiled with a crazy warm winter. It was Monster's first year at the elementary school. We walk to and from school every day, no exceptions. I remember thinking, "This isn't so bad!" in the winter. This year started out to be very mild like last. It got me nervous (see my Polar Bear post), but I wasn't going to complain either way because I was thankful for the good conditions for walking to school. Once Winter Break came, the cold weather came with it. It has been bitter, biting cold. Last week, we had a high of 8 and then the snow followed. Normally, after those type of conditions, I would be pushed over the edge with winter. However, after last winter and then the horrible allergies that followed , I won't complain, at least not much. I bundle my kids up and we make the trek all of 4 houses to the school. I've adjusted what we do to minimize their outdoor exposure. I don't run errands with them, but I do that on my time when both kids are in school. We take a little longer at swim lessons to thoroughly dry hair before heading back out across the long parking lot to the car. We layer. Each day that comes, I start out damning it for being so cold but then being grateful it is not worse. I am grateful we do live so close to the school. I am grateful I can get my errands run without having to take my kids out in this weather. This attitude has made me hate winter a little less. It has also made me appreciate days that are above freezing a little more. My worry about the polar ice caps melting is a little less, also. Instead of being mad that I'm sitting here shivering while I type, I am grateful that we got our furnace serviced this year and it works well and I will go put on a sweatshirt and slippers. I'm not past saying that I hate the cold every time I have to open the door, but I'm accepting that, unless I move, this is how it is.
