Look around. If you can’t see it, you’re part of the problem. I’m not saying that all I see are narcissists, but there are definitely more now than ever before. I still see the helpers. I see the good, but you’re blind if you can’t see the bad. If you are looking at only your small piece of life, then you are part of the problem. If you are only worrying about you and yours, you are part of the problem.
Researching this has been taking its toll on me. For years, I’ve been trying to cut toxic people from my life. Some, you just can’t, for whatever the reason, but I’ve been trying to put distance. By doing this research, I am seeing how much of society is more toward narcissistic behavior and how it’s becoming socially acceptable. It will never be acceptable in my book. Never. It hurts my heart that society is moving away from helping others and becoming a society of “look at me”. Society’s only thrive is everyone is working together and moving towards a common goal. When people are solely focused on themselves and take no accountability for their actions, we have a societal breakdown. The fact that people don’t see this, don’t understand this, is yet another sign of us moving towards narcissism. It’s also a sign of ignorance and people not paying attention in History class. Narcissism is one reason why humans never learn from the past. They don’t want to see it. They don’t want to take responsibility for their actions.
I will eventually finish my research, maybe not before they reclassify personality disorders, but at some point. Right now, I’m taking a mental health break from it. I’m going to keep looking for the helpers. I’m going to keep looking for the good. I’m going to keep helping my neighbors (spoken in the general term, but also the literal term). I’m going to keep teaching my kids life isn’t just them getting ahead, but about being a good person and doing what is right. Rarely is the right choice the easy choice, but I will continue to try to make the right choices, not just to benefit myself, but to help our world become a better place for future generations.
