Most people I know don't realize how much paper they go through. Other people I know don't really care about how much paper they go through. Me? I'm drowning in a sea of paper. Until you recycle paper, you don't really realize how much paper there is. On any given day, my darling children are drawing, painting, coloring, cutting, and/or folding paper. There is paper everywhere in my house. I am constantly walking around picking it up and putting it in the recycling bin. Today, I happened to clean out the computer room (which is no longer used for the computer, but the kids' junk). Holy paper! It makes me sick to my stomach how much paper my kids go through. It does make me feel better that I'm not buying new paper for them, we use the backs of school papers and junk mail, etc, but still, I feel as though my kids are cutting down forests faster than they can grow back! I feel as though I cleaned out at least 1,000 trees worth of paper just this morning. And this is just the paper that has been cut, colored on on both sides or folded to the point of no return. This doesn't include all the paper that is still usable, all the coloring books and all the workbooks. And that's just their stuff. On my kitchen table there are kid magazines, cards for the grandparents, flyers and ads, bills, coupons, and school work (yes, it's summer, but my kids do work during the summer to prevent the summer slide...once a teacher...) Yet, when I need a piece of paper, there is nothing. Not one thing to write my grocery or Target lists on. How can that be?!?! I keep thinking that there has to be a way around so much paper, but there isn't. My kids love art. My kids need paper. They need to create with it however they can. I tried art apps and computer programs, but it's not the same. So, until they are out of the stage of creating all of sorts of paper projects, I guess I will have to be content with knowing that at least I'm reusing paper and then recycling what is left of it. And, if you need me, you can probably find me buried under the mound of paper in the computer room or outside planting some trees!
